I just bought a pink sapphire ring. How much should I have paid?
K, I just bought a deep pink sapphire ring, about the size of a dime, but if a dime was squished into an oval. (its like the size of my thumbnail) It is completely surrounded by tiny diamonds and about 3 tiny diamonds going down each side of the band...how do I tell how many carats it is? Its not the same guage as diamonds, right? Because I have a half carat wedding ring, and this is like 7 times bigger.....I dont know if I got it for a good price or not....what do you think this would be worth??? Something doesnt sound right at the price I got it at.....

Beginners guide to the 4Cs of diamonds
The 4Cs are the international diamond grading system, used across the world today. The system was founded around 75 years ago by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America).
These Cs relate to the following -
CUT - The cut of a diamond is also known as the shape. Diamonds come in many different shapes such as round, square, oval, pear cut etc. Different diamond shapes provide different levels of sparkle.
CARAT - This is the weight of a diamond, NOT the physical size, although both size and weight obviously go hand in hand with each other.
COLOUR - Diamonds are graded according to their whiteness. Diamond colour starts at D and goes all the way down to Z. Diamonds of colour D are rare, and you will pay a premium for these. At around colour H or I, diamonds start to exhibit a slight yellow tint.
CLARITY - This refers to the amount of inclusions (or barriers to light refraction) in the diamond. All diamonds, except internally flawless diamonds, have inclusions. The trick is to minimise the amount of inclusions. The fewer inclusions, the fewer barriers there are to light refraction, and so the greater the sparkle of your diamond.
Having a basic knowledge of the 4Cs of diamonds will enable you to make an informed judgement about the relative merits of various stones. Also, don't be afraid to speak to your diamond specialists who will be able to guide you on choices between various diamonds, as rest assured, there are other characteristics about diamonds - other than the 4Cs - which should also be taken into account.
The 4Cs of diamonds, however, constitute an excellent starting point for your research.
