My chemistry prof was talking about how humans have evolved to see the color yellow most clearly?
I'm looking for some websites to back this up. He was saying how, by looking at the light spectrum we can trace the evolution of man. He said that the yellow part of the spectrum is what humans are most sensitive to because of the color of the sun, etc.
What do you think? True, false? I can't find anything to support this.
I think that's a fair hypothesis. W/ the right detector, one can "see" any wavelength of electromagnetic radiation. However, the earth is bathed primarily in "visible" light (400 to 700nm), and yellow's wavelength is just about in the center of that band, 570nm. It would make sense, from an evolutionary stand point, that the eye would be optimized to detect wavelengths in that most plentiful region.
Regarding his comment on tracking evolution, I agree w/ that too, especially when the evolution of human eyes is compared to that of other animals. The web site below discusses how other specie's eyes have evolved to their own environment (sea turtles and birds) and not to the visible light spectrum found on the surface of the earth.

Regular couples today are also selecting canary yellow stones for their engagement rings. Diamonds with a natural intense yellow color are considered more desirable than those with a slight yellowish hue. The yellow color is considered as the presence of nitrogen atoms when the diamond is formed. To give the diamonds a yellow hue, they have to undergo a process called irridiation or high pressure/high temperature treatments.
Compared with the white counterparts, yellow diamonds are much more pricey. For those couples who cannot afford a natural yellow diamond or pink diamonds, they can opt for smaller yellow diamonds or natural yellow gemstones such as yellow sapphires or citrine.
