I've been listening to the radio a bit today and I came across an interesting comparison/argument. Yesterday at Bay Hill, Tiger Woods made yet again another comeback to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational, something that he has become accumstomed to doing. His put on 18 was classic Tiger Woods. The silence turned into a growing roar as the gallery anticipated what was coming. Once the ball fell, the crowd erupted and Tiger gave his prototypal fist pump to seal the deal. The question that I heard today was a very intriguing one; are Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan the most intimidating professional athletes of all time?
It's very interesting if you think about it. Here are two guys who were incredibly clutch and dominant within their respective sports. What was it like to guard Jordan when the Bulls were down a point with five seconds to go? Was there any doubt that he would drain the shot? And for Tiger, how about when his opponent is standing across from him on 18 and he?s about take his shot that?s 15 feet away from the cup? Is their any doubt that he?s going to sink it? Both of these guys possessed the power to literally melt down their opponent. No, neither of them jawed away, or flexed their muscles to scare the other team or other player, but they certainly shook them up in way that made them the greatest of all time. Their presence alone made them unbeatable in a number of ways. Granted, their situations are different because you have a team sport against an individual effort, but I think you can still make the comparison. If Michael Jordan did not carry such an aura along with his skills, are we to say that Malone and the Jazz wouldn?t have come away with at least one ring? I think it's an argument that can be made.
For Tiger and PGA field, if his figure was not so huge in a figurative sense, would he have this many victories? Would he be in the same conversation with Jack Nicholas? One caller later suggested that Mariano Rivera could also be mentioned among these two, but I'm not sure if the comparison can go that far simply because his role is so specific for the team. For Tiger and MJ, I think it's interesting to think about how great their performances have been. Players like these do not come around very often, and I think that this conversation if definitely one to think about.
