When you’re in the market looking for the perfect souvenir or gift item, you should look at white gold pearl pendants. These are especially common when you visit states and countries near the sea. You’d find the cheapest and most exquisite white gold pearl pendants when you visit islands like Hawaii or Japan.
You need to be very careful, though when you shop for these jewelry items. While white gold and pearls are both equally precious, they’re also the easiest ones to be imitated. You’d want to get the real deal when you’re shopping for these items. Remember, dealers are only too keen on spotting the most clueless of tourists in the area.
Examining the pearl
When you buy your white gold pearl pendants, the first thing you need to look at is the authenticity of the pearls. There are two basic types of pearls in the market: cultured and uncultured. Cultured pearls are more perfect in shape and sheen, although they’re not necessarily more valuable compared to uncultured pearls. Natural or uncultured pearls, on the other hand, tend to be smaller and less perfect, although they’re sold on bands or almost similar sizes and shapes.
However, some jewelry dealers may try to sell off painted white beads to you when they know that you’re not an expert buyer of pearls. The best way for you to text the authenticity of the pearl in the pendant is to have the dealer scrape off a little bit of it from the edge. If it’s an authentic pearl, the surface won’t loose its sheen even if a bit off the top is scraped off. The residue of this scraping action should also be powder-like in consistency.
When a painted bead is scraped off, on the other hand, there will be a huge discrepancy between the appearance of the surface and the bottom of the bead. Most beads which are made to pass off as pearls are either white in color or transparent.
Examining the white gold
The second thing you should look at when you’re shopping for white gold pearl pendants is the white gold clasp or coin. If you’re purchasing a teardrop pearl pendant, and there’s very little of the white gold to look at in the first place, the only way you can be sure that it is authentic gold and not silver is to compare it with either a silver piece of jewelry or another white gold piece.
White gold is just a notch whiter than most silver pieces. You can also try asking the dealer if you can wear the piece of jewelry under water. If it’s a silver clasp or coin, the jeweler will say no. White gold, on the other hand, can be worn without worry even when you’re taking a shower or swimming. It won’t rust or fade as easily as a silver piece would.
Best places to buy
While a lot of people would be daring the black markets to purchase white gold pearl pendants, this is hardly the safest place to trade if you’re unsure about what you’re looking at. If you want a safer purchase, you should only buy from accredited jewelry shops in the area. They might be a little pricier than the stalls off the street, but at least they won’t run away with your money if the piece of jewelry you bought turns out to be less than the real thing.
