Is it safe to make a pipe out of fimo clay?
I was considering trying to make a pipe out of fimo. I am aware of the fumes when baking fimo, but i am not sure if its still unsafe after its baked. Im guessing its a bad idea, but can anybody give me a definite answer?
Also, if not fimo, can anybody recommend a kind of clay that would work and can be baked at home?
(sorry if anybody is upset by my question!)
As others have said, fimo is plastic and not clay, so it shouldn't be used for your purpose.
But you can still use real clay. It is possible to fire the clay using the same type of firing used by "primitive" people.
Make several pipes, as some might not survive the process. By the way, make them a little large, because clay shrinks as it dries and when it is fired. If you wanted something to end up 2" long, you need to make it 2 1/4" long to allow for shrinkage.
Place the pipes on a layer of ashes or dry sand and cover them with a coffee can or a terra cotta flower pot. Place the can or flower pot on some small stones when you cover the pipes. This allows some air to get to the pipes as they are being fired (which helps burn out impurities in the clay).
Prepare material for a small fire around your container. Don't use very many small sticks, as they burn too quickly and increase the temperature too quickly. Dried cow patties are great (and they don't smell at all when you burn them), but most people don't have good access to dried cow pies. Build up enough material that it completely covers your container. What you want is a fire that will burn relatively slowly but will get hot enough to get the container well into the red hot range for a period of half an hour or so. As the fire burns, keep it raked close to the container and keep the container covered with burning material.
As the fire dies down, rake the ashes around the container and try to make the pile so that it covers the container. Go away for a few hours.
When you come back, rake the fire away from the container. If there is still burning material or if the container is still red hot, you'll need to wait longer. Lift the container away to reveal your fired pipes.
If the pipes are shattered, you heated too quickly. Try again, but make the fire grow more slowly. If you dip the fired pipes in water and they fall apart, the fire did not get hot enough. If the pieces survive the firing and don't fall apart in water, you succeeded in your goal and they pipes will be serviceable, although they will be softer (more likely to break) than a glass pipe or a pipe that has been fired to high temperature.
When you are making the pipes let the clay dry enough to be quite stiff, but not yet completely dry. The clay changes to a noticeably lighter color when it is completely dry. Also if you hold the piece next to your skin and it feels cool, the clay has not yet completely dried. Potters refer to this state as "leather hard". By the way, the time between when you form the pipes and the leather hard state is a critical time in the drying process. If you rush this stage too much, the clay will crack. Depending on the humidity in your area, it can take anywhere from an evening to several days to dry to the leather hard state. If in doubt, dry more slowly.
When your pipes are leather hard, you can do interesting things with them. They are in a good state for carving or other shaping with tools (but at this point they are too dry to be shaped by bending). This is also a good time to smooth out areas that should be smooth (like where your lips touch). Use a tumble polished stone, the back of a spoon, or any other smooth, but very hard material to rub against the clay. This compacts the clay particles and makes them very smooth.
Before firing, the pipes must be COMPLETELY DRY. If you try to fire them before they are completely dry, they will be destroyed by the firing process. If the clay is dry, then when you touch it to your cheek it will not feel cold. If you are in doubt, warm the pieces in an oven set to its lowest possible temperature for an hour prior to firing.
This all sounds complicated and like a lot of work, but it's a lot easier to do than it is to read about doing. And there's something magic about making something and then firing it. It's easy to get addicted to clay.
Good luck!
Claymation – Better Than Regular Animation
Clay can be moulded and shaped in to any shape you can come imagine. claymation however can be sometimes split into two different subcategories. For the more professional animators, armature based models are often used. A second category can be described as free form or shapeless 3D animation. With armature supported models a form or kind of skeletal structure is covered in clay.
Such “armatures” are commonly made of steel framing or in other cases just wire. Unlike the free form stop motion animation it doesn’t use any internal skeleton type structure.
Recommending what clay is best for animation! An oil based Clay or Water Based Clay or maybe a polymer clay? Almost any type of clay will do for your 3D stop motion animation but there are some clays that are a lot easier to use for a numerous reasons.
However we recommend oil based clay or a good polymer soft clay. There are various brands on the market for claymation such as Van Aken or FIMO. We like FIMO soft or Van Aken ClayToon clay.
You will come across the other kind of clay and that is water based clay. Water based clay is clay mixed with water. It is usually cheap but it must be kept covered as it will dry out quickly.
Claymation with “ No Armature”
Some really good stop motion animation with clay can be made without using any armature (internal skeleton). Even human-like or animal-like figures can be made and move quiet convincingly without internal framing. Also the art of stop motion with clay blobs of abstract or non human-like figures or animal characters can be very amusing.
Clay with an Armature – Is it required to make a 3d Stop Motion Animation?
The answer is no. The only thing that limits a good stop motion animation is your imagination. So get out there and run your favourite stop motion animation software package and let you imagination run wild.
A definition of Stop Motion armature :
"Armature in stop motion animation is a skeletal type frame used to give support or rigidity to clay or other malleable material.”
