Spice Up Your Wedding Reception With Color

Are you faced with decorating a reception venue that is a little blah? Or maybe the venue is pretty enough, but you just don't want your wedding to look like every other one that has been held there this year? If these situations sound familiar, there is an easy solution: spice up your reception venue with color!

Even if you are having a fairly traditional all white wedding ceremony, you can have some fun with color at your reception. There are countless ways to enhance your reception with color, from small accents to bold brush strokes. It is all a question of your personal style and how much of a transformation you are trying to bring about at the site.

Let's face it, not every reception venue comes decorated in a fabulous way. Many are the perfect size or a gorgeous location, but may have bland interiors or ones that have not been recently updated. No problem; you can really make over a space using well placed colorful accents. The right decorations will highlight the venue's best features while obscuring any that are less appealing.

Of course, your wedding centerpieces are the most logical place to introduce color. You will want the colors of the centerpieces to look nice with the bridesmaid dresses and to work with any décor in the room that you cannot change, like wall or carpet colors. This is not to say that you need to match the flowers to the colors in your venue if you do not particularly care for them; just make sure they don't clash. For instance, if your venue has brown carpeting, you could make the space feel lighter and more feminine by using a profusion of pink flowers. A mustard yellow wall color would recede in a room filled with rich purple blossoms. You get the concept.

Color can also be a very effective device to draw the eye away from an unattractive feature in a room. If your venue has an acoustic tile ceiling, pull the eye down with brightly colored table linens. No one will see the ceiling when the tables are adorned in fab lime green tablecloths. You can also use subdued or dark colors as a masking agent. For instance, sometimes a corner of a room will have some sort of ventilation work that is an eyesore. A screen in a dark color will make that area of the room a non-factor.

Even if you love your reception space just the way it is, you can still have fun introducing some pops of color to add visual interest. Classic white tablecloths will look much more special when they are topped with amethyst colored glass chargers under the place settings. Centerpieces with flowers in several shades of purple mixed with green accents would be the perfect finishing touch.

And don't forget about how the people in the wedding party will bring more color to a room. Think about how your bridesmaids' dresses will look in your reception venue. As for the bride, it can be really fun to have a set of custom bridal jewelry made in your chosen wedding colors to wear for the reception. If you want to be a traditional bride for the ceremony, start with classic white pearl jewelry. Then between the ceremony and the reception, slip into your colorful custom bridal jewelry. It is a great way to signal the shift into party mode and to add an element of surprise to your grand entrance. Besides, no matter how fabulous you make your reception venue look, the bride should always be the most stunning attraction in the room!

Reading the Report For GIA Diamond Rings

GIA is an international non-profit gemological institute that appraises the value of loose diamonds. If you already have one or more GIA diamond rings, the stones were evaluated before they were set in the rings. The GIA set the tone for evaluating and analyzing diamonds and the same process is followed today by other diamond appraisal institutes, such as IGI appraisals. Such an appraisal is essential if you want to make sure that the diamonds you purchase are best value diamonds.

When you send loose diamonds to the GIA for grading, you will receive a report on each diamond. Reports of GIA diamond rings grading are extremely comprehensive, which is why you should be able to understand what the report says about the stones you have had appraised without too much trouble.

The date of the appraisal is always at the top of the report and there is a report number which is entered into the institute's international database. If you wish, you can have this number laser inscribed on the diamond. The next part of the report on GIA diamond rings deals with the shape and the cutting style of the diamond.

The shape of the diamond has a lot to do with determining the setting of the diamond in the ring. The cuts include round, Princess, Marquise, oval and pear-shaped. Certain settings are suited to specific cuts to ensure that the diamond looks elegant in the ring and on the hand of the person wearing it. The most common settings for diamond rings are:

• Solitaire in which the diamond is secured in a basket of four or six prongs so that it catches the light with each movement of the hand.

• Sidestone settings have other stones on each side of the diamond to keep it in place and to add enhance the brilliance and color of the stone.

• Three-stone settings have a diamond for the past, present and future.

The report for GIA diamond rings, much like IGI appraisals, also gives the measurement of the diamond. For round diamonds this is represented by the minimum depth and length and for fancy diamonds by the length times width times depth. The overall weight of the diamond is given in carats and the more carats there are the more expensive the diamond will be. This is another way of knowing whether or not you purchased best value diamonds. One carat is 1/5 of one gram and the weight is recorded to the nearest 1/100 of a carat.

There is a GIA master comparison scale when grading the color of diamonds. The best diamonds are white and almost colorless. While yellow diamonds are given the lowest grade, there are canary yellow stones that are quite valuable. These fall into the category of fancy diamonds along with those that are pink, blue, and green.

The clarity or clearness of a diamond according to the rating scale of GIA diamond rings refers to any imperfections that can be seen when the diamond is analyzed under high-power microscopes. Those diamonds with slight imperfections can still be considered best value diamonds if the imperfections in the gems are such that they cannot be seen with the naked eye or under a normal microscope.

Diamonds for GIA diamond rings are graded according to their polish and finish to determine their level of brilliance and how they reflect the light that falls on them. The diamonds are inspected for smoothness and the number of facets in the stone. Symmetry is also important to ensure that all facets are in balance and to determine the best placement of several stones in a ring.

Gemologists use ultra-violet lights to determine the amount of fluorescence in the diamonds and this is also given on the report. Many other appraisal institutes do not provide a report that is as comprehensive as one you receive from GIA. Your report will contain diagrams of the stone as well as keys to the various symbols used in the report.

I have a 10 inch tall cloisonne ginger jar, anywhere I can find out about its history?

Its in very subdued colours - mostly rusty reds, navy and dark green.

Well, if you know whom in your family bought it, which essentially is the provenance(history of ownership) of the piece that would help tremendously. You can try the Auction Houses; Sotheby's, Christie's, and Bonham's which have their past sales and auction results online. You'll have to register with them, which is free but that should give you a good start. If you have access to past auction catalogs that would help too.

Of course you can go to an appraiser who specializes in Chinese metalwork but you may have to pay for their services. One thing to remember, auction prices are usually inflated so the value you see from a auction will probably be higher than its actual worth.

You may want to check for marks on the bottom which will indicate if its been produced recently, basically within the past 50 years or so or older than that.

Ancient Egypt - The Mask of King Tutankhamun

The intact tomb of King Tutankhamun was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter in the Valley of Kings. King Tut, the Boy King, would have been relegated to relative obscurity, reigning Ancient Egypt for a mere 10 years, without the discovery of his tomb. The everlasting image of King Tut’s mask has been seen around the world and has come to symbolize the Ancient Egyptian civilization, as iconic as the pyramids themselves.

The mask protected the head of the mummy of Tutankhamun. It presents us with a beautiful, albeit idealized, portrait of the young King. Its purpose was to enable his soul to recognize his mummy and to re-enter it. Protection was assured by a magic formula engraved on the shoulders and the back of the mask. The usual Nemes headdress knotted back at the nape of the neck is a striped blue-green imitating Lapis Lazuli, a semi-precious stone found in Afghanistan. The headdress golden stripes are of solid gold. On the forehead of the mask are a royal Uraeus (a rearing cobra) and a vulture's head, symbols of the two patron deities of Lower and Upper Egypt; Wadjet and Nekhbet, both protecting the King, in gold inlaid with semi-precious stones and colored glass. The mask's eyes are made of obsidian and quartz with a touch of red at the corners: the cosmetic lines and the lids are of inlaid blue glass. The divine beard, plaited and turned up at the end, is of Cloisonn work (colored glass held in a framework of gold.) The wide necklace collar is formed of rows of Lapis Lazuli, Quartz, Amazonite and colored glass beads attached at each shoulder to a gold falcon's head (representing Horus) ornamented with obsidian. All of this intended to protect the King in his journey to the afterlife. This fabulous mask is held at the Egyptian Antiquities Museum in Cairo when not touring the world.

Ancient Egyptians believed their Pharaohs live on if their names are remembered. If that is true then a young boy born circa 3000 years ago may outlive them all.

I got one of these when I was a kid. They are real cultured pearls. You have to dig it out of the oyster yourself, so it's kind of gross. But it's also fun because you don't know what kind you will get.

They will make good presents.

Akoya Cultured Pearls

Akoya pearls are among the highly valued pearls that make up majority of the harvested pearls used in jewelry. As one of the more popular pearls today, they are bead-nucleated pearls cultured in akoya oysters scientifically known as Pinctada fucata chemnitzii and Pinctada fucata martensii found in the southern coast of Korea and of Japan’s south-eastern pacific coast. The mollusk that is now used in akoya pearl production is a hybridization of the two oysters. Today, both Japan and China use this shell as the primary akoya pearl producer. Akoya pearl farms are found in Japan, Australia, China, Vietnam and South Korea. The akoya oyster is the smallest known pearl-producing oyster that is used in pearl culture. A large number of small akoya pearls are now more massively produced in China than in Japan where it was first cultured in the 1920’s.

Akoya pearls tend to be small and their sizes range from 2 to 11 centimeters. Because of their size, they also tend to be the more highly valued pearls in terms of their nearly rounded shape which is ideal for multi-pearl strands of jewelries such as those in necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Considered to be the classic pearl, akoya pearls generally appear in white or cream color with deep overtone colors of silver, cream and rose. It is said to be the perfect pearl for jewelry because it has fewer blemishes and its mirror-like luster is deeper than those of freshwater pearls. Its classic color matches majority women of women who has fair complexion.
